The Little Mermaid (2023) – A Deep Dive into Disney’s Underwater Magic

In this live-action retelling of Disney’s beloved animated classic, we follow Ariel, the adventurous and curious young mermaid, played by the talented Halle Bailey. When Ariel falls in love with the human prince, Eric, she makes a risky deal with the sea witch Ursula (played by Melissa McCarthy) to exchange her voice for legs. What follows is an emotional, visually stunning journey filled with love, sacrifice, and self-discovery.

The underwater scenes are absolutely breathtaking, with vibrant colors and intricate details that bring the ocean to life. Disney’s special effects team truly outdid themselves, capturing the magical world of the sea with stunning realism. The wide, expansive shots of the ocean make it feel as though you’re swimming alongside Ariel.

The beloved songs from the original film, such as “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl,” are given a new, fresh twist. The new musical numbers blend perfectly with the classics, creating an unforgettable soundtrack. The updated version of “Under the Sea” brings the party to life, while the heartfelt ballads will tug at your heartstrings.

Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric is charming and believable, though his character could have used a bit more development. Melissa McCarthy brings a wickedly fun version of Ursula, full of the villainous charm we love from the animated film. The chemistry between the cast members is spot on, making it easy to get lost in the world of The Little Mermaid.
