The film opens with Connie in a vulnerable state, having just left a traumatic situation and pregnant with the child of her ex-fiancΓ©. In a desperate attempt to escape her troubles, she boards a train bound for Boston. But fate intervenes when the train crashes, and Connie is mistaken for a woman named Patricia Winterbourne, the wife of a wealthy businessman, who had been killed in the crash.
When Connie is taken to the Winterbourne mansion, she is met by the grief-stricken Winterbourne family, including the deceased’s handsome son, Bill Winterbourne (Brendan Fraser), and his strong-willed mother, Mrs. Winterbourne (Shirley MacLaine). 
As Connie is welcomed into their home and assumed to be Patricia, she finds herself caught up in the complications of this mistaken identity, as well as the romantic tension between herself and Bill.
