Anastasia (1997) is a beautifully animated musical film produced by Fox Animation Studios and directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. The movie offers a fictionalized retelling of the life of Anastasia Romanov, the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, and her journey to rediscover her royal heritage after surviving the execution of her family.
The story is set in 1920s Russia, after the fall of the Russian Empire. The movie begins with the tragic events surrounding the Romanov family’s execution, where Anastasia (voiced by Meg Ryan) is separated from her family and loses her memory. Years later, an orphan named Anya, who has no memory of her true identity, is living in St. Petersburg. She dreams of finding a place where she truly belongs, unaware that she is the lost princess Anastasia.
Meanwhile, Dmitri (voiced by John Cusack), a former palace servant, and his partner Vlad (voiced by Kelsey Grammer), are searching for someone who can impersonate the lost princess in order to claim the Romanov family’s fortune.After encountering Anya, they believe she may be the one, and they set off to Paris, where the Dowager Empress (voiced by Angela Lansbury), Anastasia’s grandmother, is waiting to reunite with her granddaughter. However, they are pursued by the villainous Rasputin (voiced by Christopher Lloyd), who cursed the Romanov family and seeks to finish the job he started.
