Border (2018)
Border (original title Gräns) is a 2018 Swedish fantasy film directed by Ali Abbasi, based on a short story by John Ajvide Lindqvist, featured in his collection Let the Old Dreams Die. The film, which blends elements of psychological thriller, fantasy, and drama, explores complex themes such as identity, human nature, and the boundaries between the self and others. With its gripping narrative and surreal visuals, Border is a thought-provoking and unconventional exploration of what it means to belong, love, and confront the darker aspects of oneself.
The protagonist of Border is Tina (played by Eva Melander), a customs officer working at a Swedish border crossing. Tina has a unique ability: she can smell guilt and deceit, a skill that helps her excel in her job but also isolates her from those around her. She is physically unattractive in the conventional sense, with a rugged appearance and an almost animal-like demeanor, making her a social outcast. However, Tina’s life takes a dramatic turn when she meets Vore (played by Eero Milonoff), a mysterious man who seems to share her strange abilities. Their meeting sparks a journey of self-discovery that forces Tina to confront her true nature and question everything she knows about herself.
