Stonehearst Asylum (2014)
Stonehearst Asylum, released in 2014, is a gripping psychological thriller that delves into the dark corners of mental health treatment during the Victorian era. Directed by Brad Anderson and inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether,” the film weaves a tale of madness, deception, and survival in a remote asylum.
Set in 1899, the story follows Edward Newgate, portrayed by Jim Sturgess, a recent medical school graduate eager to learn about the innovative practices in mental health. Seeking to further his education, he arrives at Stonehearst Asylum, an expansive and seemingly idyllic facility nestled in the woods. However, as he begins to interact with the patients and staff, Edward quickly discovers that not everything is as it seems.
The asylum is overseen by Dr. Silas Lamb, played by Ben Kingsley, whose unconventional methods challenge the boundaries of psychiatric care. He has formed a unique bond with his patients, advocating for their freedoms and human rights against the oppressive practices of the institution. As Edward becomes more entrenched in the asylum’s operations, he uncovers a shocking secret that transforms his understanding of sanity and authority.
