30 Days of Night (2007)

30 Days of Night is a gritty and chilling horror film directed by David Slade, based on the graphic novel by Steve Niles. Set in the isolated, snow-covered town of Barrow, Alaska, the story follows Sheriff Eben Oleson (played by Josh Hartnett) as he fights to protect the town’s remaining residents from a terrifying horde of vampires that descend during the month-long polar night.
This film cleverly uses its unique setting — a town plunged into 30 days of darkness — to amplify fear and claustrophobia. The vampires here are not romanticized or mysterious; they’re brutal, intelligent, and merciless predators. Their guttural language and monstrous appearance set them apart from traditional portrayals.
Josh Hartnett delivers a restrained but powerful performance as Eben, a reluctant hero whose quiet strength becomes a beacon of hope. Melissa George also shines as Stella, Eben’s estranged wife, and their strained relationship adds emotional depth to the survival-driven plot.
Visually, the film is stark and atmospheric. The contrast between the white snow and the blood-soaked attacks creates striking, nightmarish imagery. The cinematography effectively captures the desolation and hopelessness of a town under siege.
The pacing is taut, especially in the first two acts. However, the final act can feel slightly rushed and predictable, despite an emotionally resonant ending.
