Set in 1914 on the eve of World War I, the film follows Mikael Boghosian (Oscar Isaac), a young Armenian medical student who moves to Constantinople to study modern medicine. He is engaged to a woman from his hometown, but upon arriving in the city, he falls in love with Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), an Armenian woman who is in a relationship with American journalist Chris Myers (Christian Bale).
When the Ottoman Empire begins its brutal campaign against the Armenian population, Mikael, Ana, and Chris are thrown into a desperate fight for survival.
