The Jungle Book (2016)

1. Mowgli is the only real person!
The boy Neel Sethi – the actor who plays Mowgli – is the only real person to appear on screen. The entire jungle, the animals and most of the scenery were created with CGI technology. Neel had to act alone on a green screen, interacting with props or people dressed in green pretending to be animals to create visual effects later.

2. The jungle is 100% virtual – but incredibly realistic
Although audiences see Mowgli crossing rivers, climbing trees, and jumping over cliffs, the entire jungle was built virtually at a studio in Los Angeles. Graphic artists combined real-life scanning technology, photography, and lighting simulation to create a natural world that comes to life.

3. Tough – but creative – interactions
Neel Sethi had to learn to react to air, models, or props with tennis balls attached to represent the animals’ eyes. In many scenes, he had to run, jump, fight or swim… alone, imagining being chased by a tiger or talking to a bear!
