Wednesday is an American series that mixes horror with supernatural comedy, based on the iconic character Wednesday Addams from The Addams family. Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the series stars Jenna Ortega, accompanied by a prominent cast that includes Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman, Isaac Ordonez, Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Fred Armisen and Christina Ricci.

Tim Burton directs four of the eight episodes of the first season and also acts as an executive producer. The plot follows Wednesday as she attempts to unravel a mystery involving monsters and dark secrets at her school.

Interestingly, Burton had already been linked to previous projects related to The Addams family: he declined to direct the 1991 film and his proposal for a stop-motion animated film was canceled. It wasn’t until October 2020 that her participation in this television series was confirmed, which was approved by Netflix shortly after.

The filming took place in Romania between September 2021 and March 2022. The series premiered on November 16, 2022 in some territories and officially arrived on Netflix on November 23. It was met with mostly positive reviews, highlighting Jenna Ortega’s performance, though some pointed out similarities to the CW channel’s youth dramas.
