Review:
“It” (1990) is a chilling adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel, presented as a two-part miniseries that explores the terror of Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Tim Curry delivers an iconic and terrifying performance as Pennywise, blending sinister charm with pure menace that leaves an unforgettable mark.
The story alternates between two timelines, following a group of childhood friends known as the Losers’ Club as they face the shapeshifting evil in Derry, Maine, both as children and as adults. The strong ensemble cast, including Jonathan Brandis, Seth Green, and Richard Thomas, brings warmth and relatability to the characters.
While the miniseries excels in its character-driven narrative and Pennywise’s haunting presence, its TV production constraints show in the limited special effects and pacing. Some of the monster transformations and scares feel dated, but the atmosphere and emotional depth make up for it.
The first half focusing on the children is particularly compelling, capturing the essence of childhood fear and camaraderie. The adult storyline, while still engaging, lacks the same intensity and cohesion.
“It” (1990) is a nostalgic and eerie adaptation that, despite its flaws, remains a beloved cult classic. For fans of Stephen King’s work or vintage horror, it’s a must-watch.
