Lamb (2021) is an Icelandic psychological horror-drama film directed by Valdimar Jóhannsson in his feature directorial debut. The film stars Noomi Rapace and Hilmir Snær Guðnason and blends elements of folk horror, mystery, and tragedy. It is set in the remote Icelandic countryside and follows a childless couple, Maria (played by Noomi Rapace) and Ingvar (played by Hilmir Snær Guðnason), who live on a farm and lead a quiet, isolated life.
The couple discovers a newborn lamb with a human-like appearance among their flock and decides to raise it as their own child. They name it Ada and care for her, forming an unusual and disturbing family dynamic. As the story unfolds, the couple’s newfound happiness is threatened by the arrival of Ingvar’s brother, Pétur (played by Björn Hlynur Haraldsson), whose presence brings tension and disrupts their fragile sense of normalcy.
The film is subtle in its horror, using atmosphere, silence, and slow-building tension to create a sense of unease. It explores themes of grief, motherhood, and the complex nature of family, all within a backdrop of eerie and haunting natural landscapes. The film’s slow pace and minimalist storytelling contribute to its unsettling tone, and its surreal narrative evokes a sense of otherworldly strangeness.
