🎬Oculus (2013)

“Oculus” (2013) is a gripping supernatural horror film directed by Mike Flanagan that blends psychological suspense with paranormal terror. Released to critical acclaim, the film offers a fresh take on the genre, exploring themes of trauma, memory, and the blurred lines between reality and illusion. It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2013, before being widely released on April 11, 2014.
The story revolves around two siblings, Kaylie and Tim Russell, who are haunted by a traumatic event from their childhood. Many years ago, their parents were killed under mysterious and violent circumstances. As adults, the siblings are still haunted by the memory, and they suspect that a cursed antique mirror, known as the “Lasser Glass,” was responsible for their family’s tragedy. Kaylie (played by Karen Gillan) is determined to prove that the mirror is evil and holds supernatural powers, while Tim (played by Brenton Thwaites) is more skeptical, believing that his memories are distorted by the trauma of their past. The film alternates between the present, where Kaylie and Tim attempt to destroy the mirror, and flashbacks to their childhood, revealing the terrifying events that led to their parents’ deaths.
