Soldier (1998)

A soldier trained from birth is deemed obsolete and dumped on a waste planet where he is reluctantly taken in by a community of defenseless, stranded wayfarers.

If this Sci-fi actioner was released in the 80s it probably would have received rave reviews and gone on to become a box office smash, sadly it was released in the late 90s bang smack in the middle of a glut of hugely popular action movies and ended up with negative reviews and was a box office bomb. However, this is actually a criminally underrated movie and luckily it has gained a huge cult following over the years.

It’s got a great plot, pretty good special effects for the time, amazing action sequences and the performances of a nice ensemble cast including Jason Scott Lee, Jason Isaacs, Connie Nielsen, Sean Pertwee, Michael Chiklis, Gary Busey and in particular Kurt Russell elevate this even further. Add to this a great score by Joel McNeely and this is another 90s movie that deserves more praise.
