During his time with us, Jonathan Brandis stacked up an impressive list of acting roles. One notable credit is the 1992 film “Sidekicks,” where he starred alongside a talented cast, including Chuck Norris, Beau Bridges, Julia Nickson-Soul, Mako (Makoto Iwamatsu), Richard Moll, Joe Piscopo, and Danica McKellar.
In “Sidekicks,” we meet Barry Gabrewski, a young boy who often escapes into a world of fantasy. As an asthmatic kid who is constantly bullied, Barry finds solace in daydreams of fighting alongside his hero, Chuck Norris. Many of these fantasies feature his real-life bullies, including the notorious Randy Cellini, who is a thorn in Barry’s side both in school and in his imagination.
When Barry decides he wants to learn martial arts, he sets out to find a local dojo where he can train. However, he is initially turned away. Fortunately, he is welcomed by an old Chinese master of the arts, Mr. Lee, who recognizes Barry’s potential and takes him under his wing. Mr. Lee not only teaches Barry the ways of martial arts but also helps him manage his asthma, providing a sense of discipline and purpose that Barry desperately needs.
