The story follows Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly), a young, orphaned girl raised in British India who is sent to live with her reclusive uncle, Lord Archibald Craven (John Lynch), in his large but somber estate in Yorkshire. Initially a lonely and cold-hearted child, Mary soon discovers a locked, neglected garden on the property. 
With the help of her sickly cousin Colin (Heydon Prowse) and a local boy named Dickon (Andrew Knott), Mary begins to restore the garden to its former beauty.
