Aladdin (2019)

Movie Review: Aladdin (2019)

Aladdin (2019), directed by Guy Ritchie, is a vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s beloved 1992 animated classic. The film retells the story of Aladdin (Mena Massoud), a street-smart “diamond in the rough” who discovers a magic lamp and embarks on an adventure that changes his life. With the help of Genie (Will Smith) and his faithful monkey Abu, Aladdin pursues his love for Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott) while facing the manipulative villain Jafar (Marwan Kenzari), who seeks ultimate power.

Mena Massoud brings a likable charm to Aladdin, capturing the character’s mix of bravery, wit, and vulnerability. Naomi Scott shines as Princess Jasmine, giving the character more agency and strength. Scott’s portrayal is empowering, with Jasmine seeking to be a leader in her own right rather than just a love interest. Will Smith had the challenging task of following Robin Williams’s iconic performance as Genie, and he brings a fresh, charismatic twist to the role. His Genie is upbeat, funny, and full of personality, leaning on Smith’s unique style rather than imitating Williams, which allows him to make the character his own.

Visually, Aladdin is a feast for the eyes, with elaborate sets and costumes that bring Agrabah to life in bright, rich colors. The film’s musical numbers, including “A Whole New World,” “Friend Like Me,” and the new song “Speechless” (sung by Jasmine), are well-staged, adding spectacle and energy. “Speechless” particularly stands out, giving Jasmine a powerful moment of self-expression and serving as a highlight for Scott’s vocal talent.

While Aladdin largely follows the animated film’s plot, it includes some updates that add depth to certain characters, especially Jasmine. The movie also incorporates Ritchie’s fast-paced, energetic direction, though at times it feels slightly over-edited, with some scenes moving so quickly that they lose a bit of impact. Marwan Kenzari’s portrayal of Jafar, while serviceable, lacks the memorable menace of the animated version, making him a somewhat less compelling antagonist.

Overall, Aladdin (2019) is an enjoyable, family-friendly reimagining of the classic tale. It may not surpass the original, but it brings enough heart, spectacle, and fresh elements to stand on its own. With its stunning visuals, engaging performances, and memorable musical numbers, it’s a charming and entertaining film that offers a nostalgic experience for fans of the original while introducing a new generation to the magic of Aladdin.
